New Year, New Track Club

This year will be a big year for me.  In February, I will say goodbye to Kansas City and move to Houston.  Last week, I signed me and my husband up for the Houston Area Road Runners Assocation (HARRA) and The Woodlands Running Club.  Last year was a great year for me in Kansas City.  I joined Mid-America Running Association (MARA) and the Kansas City Track Club and finished the year as the MARA Grand Prix Champion.  I found a local running store where I buy all of my shoes and accessories, met a lot of incredible people, and formed a great relationship with the Kansas City running community.  I began thinking about how difficult it is to move to a new area and establish yourself as a competitive runner.  It's so nice when you can go to a race and you know almost everyone standing in the spot where you normally line up at the start.  It's a lot more relaxing when you can chat before the race with people you know.  Then, there's the issue of pacing.  After a few races with the same people, you know who is about your same speed, the person you should never let pass you, and the person who you try to stay with to push yourself.  To be honest, I didn't do a lot of group running with my track club.  I got used to training on my own.  Now, I have plans to train with my husband and with a track club more often.  I believe this will be a big change for me, but a good change because I think it will push me more.  I don't know what other people's experiences are with moving, but I'd say it's a mix of nervousness and excitement.  Plus, Houston will have much better weather, and I'm very much looking forward to that.  Kansas City is great place for runners.  Other than the cold months, the weather is usually very pleasant and the people are very friendly.  However, after running the Houston Marathon, I know that Houston will be a great place for runner as well.  The support from spectators was absolutely amazing.  For everyone who is changing clubs, moving, or even just beginning to run this year, good luck!
